History
The Lyric Theatre opened its doors in 1926 as a silent movie house and operated until the Great Depression when it was eventually sold. It was constructed in the Mission/Spanish Revival Architectural Style.
Over the next 50 years it was bought and sold to various users until 1978 when a Church purchased it. The non-denominational Church used the facility until they built their new building. By 1987, a downtown re-development effort was underway by a group of community minded people who saw the Lyric Theatre as an opportunity to save a significant historical structure. Restoration was on its way. Now the local residents of Stuart, Florida and Martin County have a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center they can be proud of.
The Lyric Theatre was named to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 12th, 1993. The grand old theatre represents a colorful history of the Treasure Coast and has become a central gathering place of the community of today.
