Red McEwen Field is the baseball stadium for the University of South Florida, located in northeast Tampa, Florida This site has been home to USF Baseball since the 1967 season. The first 10 years of its existence it was known as the USF Baseball Field. The stadium is intimate and the fans can get very close to the action.
The field was dedicated on March 30th, 1977 to James M. “Red” McEwen. Red McEwen was a civic leader and an advocate for Tampa sports. In the 1950s he was active in helping to establish the University of South Florida as a contender for sports in the region. Red McEwen passed away in the summer of 1976.
The playing surface for Red McEwen Field is natural grass, which thrives in the Florida sun. In 1976 the New York Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner donated the lights for the field. The first night game at the stadium was February 25th, 1977 against the University of Tampa. The current bleachers were installed that same year with a capacity of over 2,000. There is a covered patio area down the left field fence for viewing the game out of the sun. The dimensions for the field are 340’ down the left and right field lines, 340’ to left and right center and 400’ at dead center field.
Parking for the venue is FREE in the 3 lots around Red McEwen Field.
Fans can be dropped off right next to the front gates of the stadium. It’s a short walk from there to the ticket booth and concession stands, then right up to the bleachers.
Red McEwen Field is located in the southeast quarter of the University of South Florida’s campus. There are talks of a new future home for the USF Bulls baseball team that would be built on the existing field. Part of the University of South Florida’s plan is to build a new athletics district on the Tampa campus. The plans for the new stadium include approximately 2,000 chair-back seats with a capacity of up to 4,000.
The University of South Florida has all the ingredients for a successful baseball program. They are located in one of the best recruiting areas in the nation and they are one of the country’s largest universities. Add in a New State-Of-The-Art Baseball Facility with good weather all year round and watch out for USF Bulls Baseball.
