Th' Legendary Shack Shakers at The Social - 09-24-2010

Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers are a Nashville, Tennessee-based rock band. Their image is self-proclaimed as “Southern Gothic”, and relies on mixing and mashing the sounds of punk, polka, and traditional hillbilly forms of music. The lyrics are often poetic and nonsensical. Frequent subject matter include carnivals, monkeys, murder, mental illness, Jesus, the Devil, and alcohol. Frontman Col. J.D. Wilkes has been compared to Iggy Pop and Marilyn Manson, due to his very wild and unpredictable on-stage antics. Robert Plant is such a big Legendary Shack Shakers fan that he gave them a free spot on his Fall 2005 tour of Europe. This is a $10 to $12 18 years and older show.

Paul Thorn at The Social - 09-16-2010

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured a young Elvis generations before, Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and John Prine among many other headliners, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet fully accessible music of our time. Still, Thorn's story has never been complete. If you follow it back through his songs, at some point near the beginning the mysteries gather like a mist, obscuring the picture and leaving unanswered the question of how he acquired his ability to find brilliance buried in shadows, darkness in daylight, poetry in the mundane, and truth in the brutal beauties of life. This is a $10 18 years and older show.

Formed on Long Island, New York in 1982, they are known for their politically charged lyrics and criticism on the American media, with an active interest in the frustrations and concerns of the African American community. After hearing a recording of Chuck D's rapping on "Public Enemy No. 1," Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin signed him onto his label, who was initially reluctant but later agreed after recruiting his friend Flavor Flav as part of the group, while Professor Griff brought Terminator X, S1W, and The Bomb Squad, a production group known for their innovative, densely layered sampling.
Critics around the world raved about the first leg of The Monster Ball Tour, which Gaga described as “the first-ever Pop-Electro Opera.” Writing about her show at Radio City Music Hall, the New York Times noted that “her Monster Ball tour always provided something worth a snapshot: a sci-fi tableau, perhaps, or a skimpy, glittery costume. The more her image gets around, the better Lady Gaga does.” Lady Gaga is touring in support of The Fame Monster, which was released on November 18th, 2009. The album is the follow-up to 2008’s Grammy Award-winning album The Fame, which spawned the No. 1 singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.” Combined, The Fame and The Fame Monster have sold 11.5 million albums worldwide, while Lady Gaga’s current singles, “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Lovegame,” “Paparazzi,” “Bad Romance” and “Telephone” have combined sales over 40 million worldwide. At this year’s BRIT awards, she took home awards for International Album (The Fame), International Female Solo Act and International Breakthrough Act. Her music videos have received a combined total of over 1 billion views online, the first artist to reach this number. Lady Gaga has made another video milestone with “Bad Romance” becoming the most viewed video of all-time on YouTube.com.
Guttermouth at The Social - 08-11-2010

Guttermouth is an American punk rock band formed in 1988 in Huntington Beach, California and currently recording for Volcom Entertainment. They have released nine full-length studio albums and two live albums and have toured extensively, including performances on the Vans Warped Tour. They are infamous for their outrageous lyrics and behavior which are deliberately explicit, offensive and intended to shock, though usually in a humorous and sarcastic manner. This behavior has sometimes resulted in high-profile problems for the band, such as being banned from performing in Canada for a year and leaving the 2004 Warped Tour amidst controversy over their political views and attitudes towards other performers. In 2005 drummer Ty Smith left Guttermouth to focus on his new band Bullets and Octane and was replaced by Ryan Farrell. Bass player Kevin Clark departed the following year and founding member Clint Weinrich returned to the group. This lineup recorded the band’s tenth album Shave the Planet, released in 2006 by Volcom Entertainment. The album found the band once again using their brand of humorous punk rock to poke fun at a number of subjects. Guttermouth continues to tour and perform in support of the album. This is an all ages $15 show. TNT & Mike Pinto are also scheduled to perform.

Exodus at The Social - 09-04-2010

Exodus is one of the first thrash metal bands to come out of the bay area, formed in 1980 in San Francisco, California, by Kirk Hammett, Tom Hunting, Paul Baloff, Jeff Andrews, and Gary Holt. They were cited as major influence by pretty much every thrash band. Known for their aggressive brand of thrash, as opposed to the more melodic, NWOBHM rooted thrash sound of the likes of Metallica, and equally aggressive live shows. At their prime (83-86) they were known as ‘Kings of the Bay (area)’, with practically no band daring to headline over them at the bay area. After several personnel changes, Exodus split in 1993. The band reformed from 1997-1998 with new bassist Jack Gibson. The band reformed a second time in 2001. Exodus is currently touring in support of the newly released album “The Atrocity Exibition: Exhibit A”. In 1983, founding member Kirk Hammett left to join Metallica and was replaced by Rick Hunolt and Rob McKillop replaced Andrews on bass. This lineup released the classic title Bonded by Blood (1985) cited as an influence on up-and-coming bands of the era. Shortly before the release of Pleasures of the Flesh (1987), Paul Baloff left and was replaced by Steve “Zetro” Souza, who also sang for Legacy, which developed into Testament. This is an 18 years and older $17-$90 show. Malevolent Creation, Holy Grail, & Bonded By Blood are also scheduled to perform.

Over the past 20 years, Jones has frequently been referred to as "The Greatest Living Country Singer." Throughout his long career, Jones made headlines often as much for tales of his drinking, stormy relationships with women, and violent rages as for his prolific career of making records and touring. His wild lifestyle led to Jones missing many performances, earning him the nickname "No Show Jones." With the help of his fourth wife, Nancy, he has been sober for many years. Jones chalked up more than 150 hits during his career, both as a solo artist and in duets with other artists. The shape of his nose and facial features have given Jones the nickname "The Possum."
